Leading Allergist Pioneers Efforts To Bring Sufferers 'Allergy And Asthma Solution'

In 1998, Dr. Dean Mitchell, a leading, traditionally-trained New York City allergist, had a career-altering occurrence. One of his patients experienced a life-threatening allergic reaction to an allergy shot and it required an immediate visit to the emergency department. Since that day, Dr. Mitchell has been determined to change the way that allergies and asthma are diagnosed and treated, ensuring that patients have access to cutting-edge advances. This experience led Dr. Mitchell to write Dr. Dean Mitchell's Allergy and Asthma Solution, which will be available beginning in mid-August wherever books are sold from Marlowe & Company, an imprint of Avalon Publishing Group.

"My focus is to help people better understand how allergies and asthma develop and provide them with information to effectively manage these serious conditions," said Dr. Mitchell. "In my book, I discuss the basics of allergies, the link between allergies and asthma and the limitations of conventional diagnostics and treatment as well as advances in this area."

Dr. Mitchell's approach includes an Asthma Action Plan, a Better Breathing Program and the latest information in diagnostic testing and treatments. Dr. Mitchell highlights specific IgE blood tests, which are emerging as a safe and effective alternative to the skin tests historically used to identify allergies. Studies now show that this simple blood test can predict which patients are predisposed to developing allergies and asthma.

Allergy drops also take a prominent position in Dr. Mitchell's book. After allergens are identified through testing, the doctor makes an allergy vaccine comprised of extracts approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine, administered through drops under the tongue, builds the patient's immune system to protect against future allergen exposure.

"These advances have been slow to be adapted in the United States because of resistance to change in the clinical practice of allergy management," said Dr. Mitchell. "However, the scientific evidence is vast to support the accuracy of specific IgE blood testing and allergy drops have been safely administered in approximately 50 million people worldwide."

The allergy drops are made up of the same extracts as those in immunotherapy shots. These drops have been used in children and adults throughout Europe for decades, and are currently under investigation through clinical trials in the United States. This method provides a safe and convenient way for the immune system to develop a tolerance to the allergens and actually prevent symptoms by treating the underlying condition.

"I hope my book educates physicians and patients about the important advances being made in allergy and asthma management," said Dr. Mitchell. "This information will empower allergic patients with the help of their physicians to take control and reverse their allergies and asthma."
